Wonderstruck

Wonderstruck

Selznick, B. (2001). Wonderstruck. NY: Scholastic Press.

We have two stories in one that take place fifty years apart with a surprising connection in the end. Ben Wilson is a deaf boy who lives with his aunt and uncle after recently losing his mother. After finding a note stuck in a book that once belonged to his mother called Wonderstruck, he is convinced it is the father he never knew. Rose is also deaf and obsessed with and actress whose every move she documents. Both children are searching for their identity and go out on separate journeys in search of self. When their lives interact by chance, they realize they have a bond that is closer than any other.

I recommend this book for middle and high school. The novel is set fifty years apart and is both in text and pictures. I felt it was absolutely neccessary that Brian use pictures as well as words to better relate to those who have lost their hearing. It was a thoughtful and well executed move that should be appreciated by all who have the chance to read.
