We Are The Ship
Nelson, K. (2008). We are the ship. NY: Hyperion.
Baseball has come a long way. If you want to know how far, please read We Are the Ship:The Story of Negro League Baseball beautifully written and illustrated by Kadir Nelson. This story magnifies the determination and talent of both the players and owners. Faced with blatant racial discrimination, segregation, horrible conditions and low pay, these unsung heroes were able to overcome just to play the game of baseball. Kadir chronicles the beginning of the Negro League in the 1920s to 1947 when Jackie Robinson entered the major leagues.
I must admit, this was a hard read. I am an African American female and it was hard to read the thing these courageous men had to endure to play a game they loved. To know they had all of these challenges because ot the color of their skin was hard to swallow. More importantly, it made me beam with pride and admiration of the pure strength and will to succeed. I recommend this book to anyone who has dreams and doubts what they can accomplish.
