Where the Wild Things Are

Where the Wild Things Are

Sendak, M. (1963). Where the wild things are. NY: Harper Collins.

Where the Wild Things Are is a classic children’s picture book written and illustrated by Maurice Sendak. We have a very mischievous little boy named Max. His mom has finally had enough and he is sent to his room without dinner. Soon his room becomes an overgrown forest, then a boat appears and he is sailed away . After some time, he ends up on an island where the wild things live. The creatures are horrible until  Max tames them. They make him king of all wild things. He lets them do whatever they want day and night. After a while, Max grows tired of them and sends the creatures to bed with nothing to eat. Max became lonely and yearns to be around someone who cares and loves him. So, he leaves the wild things and sails across the ocean. He ends up back in his room where dinner is waiting,

I enjoyed the book and recommend it for all ages. There are a plethora of themes here. The one that stands out the most for me is unconditional love. The love Max's mother display by leaving him food after he has been a complete terror is unconditional love. As a parent, I can relate. Our child(ren) have done and will do things that we may not agree with. We will probably reprimand in some fashion, but our love for them will always shine the most.
