The Three Pigs
Wiesner, D. (2001). The three pigs. NY: Clarion Books.
The Three Pigs starts off very similar to the classic, The Three Little Pigs. The pigs three houses out of different materials. The wolf is able to destroy the houses of the first two pigs because it was made of sticks and straw. He is unable to do the same to the third little pig because it was made of bricks. This is where the similarities end for the two stories. The shift changes, and we are taken on an adventure through several classic nursery rhymes. We end with the wolf unable to blow the brick house down and instead encounters a dragon who makes wolf soup out of him. The pigs, the dragon and even the cat on the fiddle live happily ever after.
This version is not a favorite of mine. I can however appreciate Mr. Wiesner’s attempt to take a different approach to an all time classic children’s story. If you can kept up with the twist and turns after the failed attempt to blow the third pig’s house down, then you should enjoy The Three Pigs immensely.
