Mirror Mirror
Singer, M. (2010). Mirror Mirror. NY: Dutton Children’s Books.
Mirror Mirror is a wonderful blend of poetry and fairy tale turned upside down literally! This is a new genre called reverso. Reverso can be on any topic. You take a poem and read it forward, then reverse the lines and read again. You are only allowed to change punctuation and capitalization. Marilyn does an excellent job displaying this in Mirror Mirror with some of the fairy tales we have grown to love throughout childhood and are now sharing with our own children. The vivid illustrations only enhance the ingenious of the whole concept. This is a fun book and can and should be enjoyed by all.
This is the perfect example of the phrase, “Two side to every story”. I was amazed even more everytime I read a different poem and was able to see a different point of view. Although I feel it could be a challenge for some to get use to this format, I think it would be well worth the try. Who’s up for the challenge?
