Brown Girl Dreaming
Woodson, J. (2014). Brown Girl Dreaming. New York, NY: Penguin Books.
Jacqueline was born and mostly raised in the North but, spent summers in the South with her grandparents. She grew up in the 60's and 70's during Jim Crow and the Civil Rights Movement. This was not a good period of time for people of color. Despite everything, she maintains her pride in self and family and achieves her dreams bigger than she could ever imagine.
Jacqueline Woodson’s eloquent storytelling through her poetry is captivating and relevant for middle, high and adult readers. She is able to transcend her thoughts through words and pull you into her world for all the good, bad and ugly. Her story is inspiring that despite the obstacles life can hand you, if you believe you can achieve all your dreams even if you are a little brown girl.
