Echo
Block, F. L. (2001). Echo. NY: HarperCollins Publishers.
Summary
This novel is about a girl name Echo, born in Los Angeles to
an artistic dad and a mother who is an angel. Echo is quite jealous of her mother Eva’s beauty and craves
the attention of her father Caliban. After the death of her father, Echo spends
most of her time in relationships with men wanting to feel loved. She sets out
on a journey of discovery where she is caught between the natural and
supernatural. In her quest she endures hardship, despair and triumph through
her encounters with angels, fairies, ghost, demons, and vampires. She is in the
fight of her life. In the end, her strength for survival prevails.
Reflection
Although this story is heavily entangled with the
supernatural, the concepts are very realistic and relevant to today. The love and
acceptance of a father can have led to a lot of wrong turns in life. This book
did not shy away from the effects that love, lost, jealousy and acceptance have
when not nurtured. Echo’s journey through drugs, sex and dying ultimately gives
her what she has always yearned for-self-respect.
