100 Sideways Miles
Smith, A. (2014). 100 sideways miles. NY: Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing.
Summary
Finn Easton is a young high school junior from California
who feels trapped inside a storyline his famous author father wrote in his book
Lazarus Door. He feels it is not a coincidence that the main character
resembles him, has a scar up his back and has epilepsy just like him. As a
young child Finn and his mother were in a very bizarre accident on a bridge
that claimed her life when a horse falls from a truck and struck them. From
that day forward, he sees time passing in miles. Cade Hernandez is Finn’s best
friend. He is wildly insane and adventurous. There is never a dull moment
between them. Finn meets and falls in love with a transfer student with a past
name Julia Bishop. Unfortunately, Julia moves away. Finn goes on a road trip to
Oklahoma with Cade to get away from everything and everyone. While on their
trip, the boys encounter strangers who they risk their lives to save. This
experience helps Finn find strength to break free of the stigma associated with
his father’s book and he is finally able to make decisions for his life on his
own terms.
Reflection
This is the
first book I’ve read from the author Andrew Smith. I was pleasantly surprised
that I enjoyed it as much as I did. It is not a book for everyone! If you enjoy
quirkiness, humor and a little overuse of some gross terms, then I recommend
this read. Also, the range of emotions Finn displayed really made it feel like
a real high school student would go through problems. Very relatable and
realistic novel.
The following are other books by the author.
